Founders
The Meebits NFT project was created by Matt Hall and John Watkinson, the co-founders of Larva Labs.[1][2] They collaborated with the founders of Yuga Labs, who brought expertise in operating and growing Profile Picture Projects (PFP) and their communities.[3]
Launch
The Meebits NFT collection was launched by Larva Labs on May 4, 2021.[4] The collection consists of 20,000 algorithmically generated 3D characters, rendered in voxels, and linked to NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain.[5]
Meebits sold out within 8 hours of launch, generating 22,500 ETH in sales (equivalent to $75 million at the time). Members of the community attribute the success of the launch partly due to Larva Labs' previous project, Cryptopunks, launched in 2017.[4]
Metaverse Integration
Meebits are designed to be used as 3D avatars in various metaverse environments, including The Sandbox, Decentraland, and CryptoVoxels.[6][7] The fully-rigged 3D characters are intended for use in any metaverse, positioning Meebits to benefit from the growing trend of metaverse experiences and Web3 interoperability.[8]
The project provides a T-pose OBJ file, allowing users to import their Meebits into most 3D modeling and animation software for customization.[5][8] Meebits aims to capture status-as-a-service in the virtual reality metaverse.[9]
Marketplace
The Meebits NFT project includes an official marketplace that offers a zero-fee system for simple transactions and supports more complex trades involving multiple Meebits. The marketplace is partly run off-chain to minimize gas fees and network usage, providing a user-friendly experience for trading and sharing Meebits. In addition to the official marketplace, Meebits NFTs are available on other NFT marketplaces like OpenSea and Crypto.com's NFT marketplace.[8] The no-fee marketplace is coded at the smart contract level, allowing users to trade their digital collectibles without incurring additional costs.[8]
Community and Governance
The MeebitsDAO community was established on Discord in May 2021, and founding and general membership was opened in June 2021.[10] The DAO has received a significant response from the community and is now backed by the developers as well.[11]
